Our History
Serving families since 1982
West Ridge Early Education Centre (WREEC) is a non-profit organization incorporated through the Ministry of the Attorney General and licensed by the Ministry of Education, governed by the Child Care and Early Years Act.
We originally opened our doors as Treasure Island Day Care Centre (TIDCC) in July of 1982 offering child care services to families in Orillia and the surrounding communities. Our Centre began at the Huronia Regional Centre in the Heritage Building and was licensed for 32 children with 5 staff members.
In July of 1996 we were offered a space at the newly designed Ontario Provincial Police Headquarters with the capacity to serve 81 children and provide employment to 12 staff members. Following a provincial security review TIDCC was asked to relocate from OPP GHQ. The Province of Ontario provided TIDCC with capital funding to build West Ridge Early Education Centre (WREEC) in 2009.
WREEC is a fully integrated setting supported by Simcoe County Resource Consultant Services (SCRCS), Early Intervention Program. West Ridge Early Education Centre offers care for children aged 6 weeks to twelve years of age. The Centre, on 735 University Ave (West Campus) has the building capacity for 165 children and 38 staff members. WREEC has 10 classrooms comprised of 1 Infant classroom, 2 Toddler classrooms, 2 Preschool classrooms, 3 Pre JK classrooms, and a Kindergarten and School Age before and after school, PA Day, and school holidays program.
In July of 2024, WREEC opened a second location at 250 West Street North (North Campus) through a partnership with the County of Simcoe and the Ministry of Education (Directed Growth Plan) to expand child care spaces in Orillia. The building has capacity for 57 children and 12 staff members. The North Campus has 4 classrooms comprised on 1 Infant classroom, 1 Toddler classroom, 1 Preschool classroom, and 1 Pre JK classroom.
